Manual entries keep the process deliberate

A manual trip is useful when you want to enter the journey yourself. In DriveFive, choose Manual trip on Home or Manual entry in Trips, select the vehicle and date, and enter the starting and ending dashboard odometers. Then add the category, purpose and places.

Manual entry works with Auto Trip and NFC switched off and without location permission. If you choose Use current GPS for a place lookup, that is a separate location action. You can also type place names or choose saved places.

The main responsibility is remembering accurate readings and details. If you make only a few journeys, entering them when you park may be a manageable habit. If you wait several weeks, deciding which reading belonged to which stop becomes harder. Confirm the review checkbox only when you have checked the information.

Start a GPS trip when you want a clear beginning

Choose Start GPS trip, confirm the vehicle and starting odometer, and enter the category and purpose. Read the location explanation and allow the requested Android permissions if you want to use GPS features. Wait for a reliable fix before setting off.

A trip started with this button continues until you finish it. Its behaviour is different from an NFC stop timer or an automatically detected trip. Use Pause or Resume deliberately: pausing excludes movement while paused and introduces a route break.

GPS is convenient, but it does not produce a perfect record under every condition. Poor fixes, battery controls, denied permissions, force-stop or a phone restart can interrupt recording. After a restart or force-stop, reopen DriveFive and check the status. Inspect a saved journey if you notice a gap.

NFC and automatic logging solve different starting problems

An NFC tag gives you a physical reminder and a vehicle-specific start action. Tap a programmed tag while parked, confirm the category if the assignment asks, and check that recording begins. The same vehicle’s tag can finish the trip. NFC still starts a GPS trip; the tag does not measure distance by itself.

Automatic logging watches for sustained movement at driving speed when enabled. It uses the assigned vehicle, category, purpose and stop delay. A sustained stop can finish the trip, and monitoring then remains available for another journey.

Automatic detection cannot reliably know whether you are the driver or a passenger, and it cannot know why you stopped. Review those journeys and switch monitoring off when you do not want it. A hands-off start is useful only if the resulting record matches what happened.

Match the method to the part you tend to forget

  • If you prefer to control every entry, begin with manual trips and a habit of noting odometers while parked.
  • If you remember to start and finish but want GPS distance and a retained route, try an explicitly started GPS trip.
  • If selecting the vehicle is the repeated friction, a correctly assigned NFC tag can make the start routine more direct.
  • If starting each journey is what you often forget, consider optional automatic logging and make trip review part of your routine.

You do not have to use one method forever. Test a method on a familiar journey, check the saved result, and decide whether the routine feels natural. Change one setting at a time so you can understand the effect. DriveFive uses a single recorder, which prevents separate simultaneous GPS trips for different vehicles.

Every method ends with the same review

Open Trips and use Trips needing review for the selected vehicle and dates. Check the vehicle, purpose, endpoints and odometers against the journey you made. Resolve an unexplained gap instead of accepting a record only because it has a distance attached.

Before exporting, choose the intended vehicle and date range in Reports & backups. A clean report is easier to produce when the underlying entries have already been checked. If records are missing, an export cannot fill in the journey from memory for you.

The useful comparison is therefore not “Which method means I never think about mileage again?” It is “Which method makes it easiest for me to keep accurate records?” Choose the start routine that fits, then leave a little time for the review that all four approaches still need.
